Lessons Learned

Early January was the end of the wrestling season for Evan. This sport taught us a lot. Wrestling taught us about losing...gracefully. It taught us perseverance. It taught us It taught us the ONLY way to win is to put in the work. It also taught us patience....because wrestling meets take alllllll day.

Anyone I talk to who has done wrestling in the past tells me it was the hardest sport they ever did, but it helped them the most in their other sports.

Evan finally got his first pin! This is huge in the wrestling world. Normally matches last one and a half to two minutes. If you get a 10 the notch is officially over. Now I don't know much about wrestling but if Evan can win in 30 seconds, I'll take it.  Watching someone Try to force your son to the ground for six minutes total is rough. Getting a pin is where skill and endurance meet. Evan was able to take the endurance he gained in practice and the skills he learned from the coaches to get a pin. In that meet, he came out with fourth-place. He had 'placed' before in other meets, but he was fourth out of four. We had many discussions that we don't consider that 'placing'. This mom doesn't do medals for last place. This meet he was fourth out of eight. Eddie, the coach, looked at me and said, "mom, does this count?" Hell yes, it counts!

At the end of the season, Evan came out with the "Most Improved Wrestler" award. This award shows how much work he put in this season! How his drive pushed him to get better. Whether you win one match or 100 matches hard work will be rewarded.  Thanks Eddie and Melo for being such amazing role models for my kid!
